This research presentation explores the complex relationship between Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and epilepsy, examining shared neurophysiological mechanisms, risk factors, biomarkers, and emerging treatment approaches. Natasha Nesic reviews the significantly elevated prevalence of epilepsy among individuals with ASD and highlights the role of EEG and QEEG in identifying atypical neural activity, connectivity patterns, and early biomarkers associated with both conditions. The presentation also evaluates the growing evidence supporting neuromodulation interventions—particularly sensorimotor rhythm (SMR) neurofeedback—as a promising, non-invasive treatment strategy for reducing seizure activity and improving neurological regulation.
